We arrived in Buenaventura with the people we were accompanying and were able to enjoy a wonderful sunset. This particular time, PBI accompanied two members of the Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission in Bajo Calima (Valle del Cauca, Pacific Coast). The Commission has escorted Afro-Colombian members of the small hamlet El Crucero since 2010.

  • We arrived in Buenaventura with the people we were accompanying and were able to enjoy a wonderful sunset. This particular time, PBI accompanied two members of the Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission in Bajo Calima (Valle del Cauca, Pacific Coast). The Commission has escorted Afro-Colombian members of the small hamlet El Crucero since 2010.
  • From the balcony of the hotel and before heading to El Crucero, the town hall’s wonderful mural opened up before our eyes.
  • We arrived at El Curcero and the women there began to prepare breakfast for everyone attending the meeting.
  • Exquisite tomatoes were ready to be chopped for scrambled eggs at breakfast.
  • Locals at El Crucero arrived little by little at the little school, where a meeting is being held by the community to create its own Community Council "El Porvenir". This is a requirement this community of Afro-Colombians must meet before they can apply for a land title in the area where they have lived for generations.
  • Locals, well-groomed and in their best atire, gradually arrive at the meeting site.
  • The meeting begins giving way to the vote to decide the constitution of the new Board and representatives.
  • The decision has been made. The new board called "El Porvenir" is formed, with an appointed legal representative, Board of Directors and the committees responsible for different areas.
  • Children are outside, having fun.
  • One of the PBI members accompanying the Commission for Justice and Peace entertains the children while the event unfolds.
  • We accompany part of the new Board to the area where their working ranches have been burned in the past.
  • The community has tried to protect their cultivation areas with signs. The community hopes that the negotiations that they are currently undertaking with businesses, the mayor and the police force will bring about the expected result so they can continue on their land, the livelihood for more than one hundred families.
